Parents First, Experts Too

Our most important qualification cannot be learned in a university lecture hall. We are parents first.  We live with Type 1 Diabetes 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We know the sleepless nights, the anxiety, and the precise daily monitoring and management required to keep our children safe.  As well as being parents to children with T1, some of our association leads also have T1 themselves.

This real-world, lived experience is our greatest strength and without doubt our most important “qualification”.

However, our association is also equipped to support and fight for change because our parents also bring professional expertise to the table.

Our association leads include:

School Teachers & SEND Parent Leads

We understand classroom dynamics, school rules, and internal educational systems. By connecting families of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) to local authority services, we ensure family voices actively shape children's services and policy decisions.

GPs & Nurses

We understand the clinical complexities of T1 diabetes and speak the language of healthcare providers. Acting as a supportive bridge, we aim to help simplify complex medical terminology for newly diagnosed families. Our deep familiarity with NHS primary care frameworks helps us to advocate effectively for parents.

Professors & academic researchers

Professors & academic researchers

Our team includes Professors who lead vital academic research. Their expert articles on family well-being, including T1 diabetes have been read over one million times, bringing trusted guidance to families globally.

Parental hospital representatives

Several of our association leads collaborate with trusted national organisations, including SECAL, part of the National Children and Young People’s Diabetes Network. Additionally, they serve as official parent representatives for hospital T1D paediatric departments.

Our Mission

Like many T1 families, we have had to fight hard for basic, essential care. Under the Equality Act 2010, schools have a legal duty to provide "Reasonable Adjustments" so disabled pupils are not placed at a disadvantage.

By combining our deep, protective care as parents with our diverse professional backgrounds, we are well positioned to guide families and schools alongside supporting policymakers. We work constructively with individual schools and community leads to establish safer, improved school guidance, prioritising the health, safety, and well-being of T1 pupils and families everywhere.

Advocacy

We continuously advocate for tailored, one-to-one support across all areas of a child's life, including:

Early Years:  Nursery and preschool care.

Classroom Adjustments:  School support and exam accommodations.

School Trips:  Safety and inclusion during residential trips and outdoor excursions.

Outside of school, we also advocate for:

Activities:  Inclusion in extracurricular activities, including swimming lessons.

Wellbeing:  Essential mental health and emotional support.

Until a cure is finally found, we are actively fighting to secure a better, safer, and fairer quality of life for our children today.
